Curriculum Subjects

Our curriculum is underpinned by the National Curriculum (2014). We provide a rigorous, well planned curriculum, delivered by excellent staff in an ethos of care, love and support enabling our pupils to be well rounded, empathetic young people who have a thirst for learning and respect for all around them.

We believe that education, at home and at school and our curriculum, should enable children to encounter and begin to explore the wealth of human experience. We do this through induction into, and active engagement in, the different ways through which humans make sense of their world: intellectual, moral, spiritual, aesthetic, social, emotional and physical, through R.E., language, mathematics, science, the humanities, the arts and other ways of knowing and understanding the rapidly changing world in which we live and work.

Education is also a route to equality of opportunity for all. We need to value ourselves, our families, our parish and community, and the environment in which we live.

In particular, we need to be prepared to engage as individuals, parents, workers and citizens with economic, social and cultural change, and with the rapid expansion of communication technologies. Our taught curriculum and the experiences which we make available for the children aim to ensure that they are healthy, safe and enjoy and achieve as they become good citizens for the community.

We aim to create a curriculum that has ‘breadth’ and ‘balance’.
Aims for our school curriculum

  • Inspire children to develop a love of learning.
  • Embed skills to prepare children for further learning and productive adulthood.
  • Take learning beyond the classroom.
  • Develop children to become reflective learners who have a sense of responsibility for their own learning and development.
  • Build confidence and motivation within our children.
  • Grow children who understand the importance of perseverance, resilience and tolerance.
  • Enable children to use their acquired skills and knowledge to observe, question and think.
  • Learn to value others, their views, cultures and beliefs.

Our curriculum is arranged so that all subject areas are given adequate coverage over the period of a school year. We have specifically allocated ‘Topic Weeks’ where children learn specific skills and knowledge in greater depth, through a themed approach. The learning emphasis in these weeks is driven through the Humanities. Children still have a stand-alone Maths lesson but they encompass their English learning within the chosen topic. This allows the following weeks learning to focus on core subjects: English, Maths, R.E., Science and P.E. using the information they have gained in Topic Weeks to develop their core skills.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

“We learn and grow together with Jesus.”

The school adopts the Come and See programme recommended by the Archdiocese. A whole school approach is used and appropriate levels of the programme are being followed ensuring entitlement of every child.

The school is a place in which the Gospel spirit of consideration, care and courtesy permeates every aspect of its life and work.

The school provides Collective Worship in a variety of ways for each child daily. Time is given to individual reflection and prayer. Parents, Carers and Governors are invited to a number of assemblies and masses during the school year.

EDUCATION IN PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS

(Includes Sex Education)

This is linked with RE, Science and PSHE. In RE, we consider the “relationships” aspect. In Science, we consider the biological aspects of human development. It is taught to each year group.

Upper Key Stage Two children take part in an approved programme of study for Sex and Relationship Education (SRE) based on our Christian and Catholic values and principles.

 ENGLISH

 Our aim at St. Benedict’s is to develop and nurture well rounded, literate children.  We encourage our young children’s natural curiosity for the world around them by promoting enjoyment and love of reading, which, in turn, enables their speaking and listening skills to develop fully. We teach phonics through the ‘Letters and Sounds’ programme which supports the development of reading and writing. Children are encouraged to write using the cursive style of letter formation from Reception class. Additional information about the teaching of English across the school can be found within the information packs for Reception, KS1 and KS2.

MATHS

 The children follow the Primary Framework for Maths.

We aim to develop a numerate environment where mathematical risk-taking, creativity and logical thought are encouraged in order to develop independence. Resources are on hand so that Maths can be presented in practical contexts. We view maths as an integral part of the curriculum, not only essential for learning but also for life’s routines. We also encourage Maths to be used in other subject areas.

The aim is to develop a positive attitude to mathematics whereby all children gain success and pleasure.

SCIENCE

Children have a natural curiosity about the world around them and we aim to foster that curiosity and prepare children for a life in an increasingly scientific and technological world. Through many practical activities they learn about themselves, animals and plants; about how and why we use a variety of natural and man-made materials; about forces and energy.

The children have access to information through a variety of schemes and are encouraged to develop practical skills through an investigational approach.  As they progress through the school we introduce more sophisticated equipment, which assists in the development of their scientific knowledge, skills and understanding. We hope to provide children with an enjoyable experience of science, with a deep and lasting interest, fostering concern about and appreciation of our environment and our world.

I.C.T.

Here at St. Benedict’s, we are very proud of our BECTA mark award which highlights our embedded learning and enjoyment of ICT.

From Reception pupils are taught to use I.C.T. equipment and software confidently.  They use computers for communication, handling information, problem solving, recording music, data and control.  Where appropriate pupils are given opportunities to develop and apply their information and communication technology capability across a variety of curriculum areas.

In both Key Stage departments there is a mobile suite of laptop computers and Macs which all have internet access.  Each class has access to the laptops for I.C.T. lessons and interactive teaching and learning is embedded across the curriculum. Each class also has an Interactive Whiteboard and the school is very well resourced with a variety of equipment.

The Creative Curriculum

At St. Benedict’s, the foundation subjects are linked together under one topic title theme, to develop a creative curriculum, enabling the children to develop key skills in all subject areas.

Inclusion in its broadest sense is the central principle to our curriculum.  We aim to ensure that as all children move through our school, they have the best possible opportunities to grow into confident individuals, who have a clear understanding of personal and civic responsibilities and who possess the abilities and skills to become independent life long learners.  This can only be achieved when a curriculum exists that responds to the changing needs, interests and values of children and groups of children, a curriculum that exists with the structures, systems and approaches that allow all children to flourish.

Our ‘Creative Curriculum’ is designed and organised to not only be accessible to all children but to engage, and inspire in order for them to achieve their potential and make the best possible progress during their time at St. Benedict’s Catholic Primary School.

 P.E. and Games

Physical Education is taught to the government requirement of two hours per week and linked, where possible, within our Creative Curriculum. Our aim is to encourage all children to develop vital skills that will lead to a healthy and active lifestyle.

Sporting Aims and Provision

As part of our Christian ethos, we endeavour to promote the positive attitudes of fair play, honest competition and good sporting behaviour whether as a participant or spectator.  Netball, football, rounders and cricket are some of the games played in school.  Swimming is also part of the P.E. curriculum.  We have a number of extra curricular sporting activities run by staff, parents and external agencies including Netball, Football, Dance, Judo, Yoga etc. and we encourage all our children to develop an active and healthy lifestyle.
