PHYSICAL EDUCATION

PE Intent:

St Benedict's Catholic Primary School believes that Physical Education (PE), experiences in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development and good health. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in developing life skills. We want to teach children skills to keep them safe such as being able to swim. We also want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values. Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at St Benedict’s, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes. This policy outlines the teaching, organisation and management of the P.E. taught and learnt at St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School.

At St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School, we believe P.E. is essential for the promotion of healthy lifestyles and positive attitudes to learning.  P.E. develops pupils’ physical competence and confidence and develops their ability to perform a range of activities.  It promotes physical skilfulness, physical development and knowledge of the body in action.  Physical Education provides opportunities for pupils to be creative, competitive and to face up to different challenges as individuals, groups and teams.  It encourages problem solving and co-operative thinking and planning.  Pupils learn how to plan, perform and evaluate actions, ideas and performances to improve their quality and effectiveness.  Through this process, pupils discover their aptitudes, abilities and preferences and learn to make choices about how to get involved in lifelong physical activity.

Please see our Physical Education Policy for more details about the implementation and impact of the teaching and learning of PE at St Benedict's.
