EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE (EYFS)

In Reception Class at St Benedict's, we understand the importance of  developing the 'Prime' and 'Specific' areas of Early Years Development. These are:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Literacy
  • Maths
  • Understanding the world (Geography/History/Science) and
  • Expressive Arts and Design.

Due to the new early years framework moving away from constant observations for learning journeys, assessment focus is on adults working with children and focusing upon language development.

Our classroom is set up with specific learning areas that children can engage in independently or with an adult. These are called areas of continuous provision and are:

  • Malleable area
  • Painting area
  • Art/DT area
  • Role play area
  • Maths area
  • Literacy area
  • Construction area
  • Reading area
  • Phonics area
  • Investigation table
  • Outdoor provision
  • Writing area
  • Smart board area

Reception Class in Autumn and Spring Term

The first half term of Reception Class is spent teaching children about routines such as what the day looks like and classroom rules, which will continue as we develop the children’s ability to work independently.

At St Benedict's, we understand the importance of physical activities to build core strength and manipulation skills in young children. Therefore, activities in Autumn and Spring term in Reception class include:

  • Threading
  • Belly writing
  • Gross motor skills
  • Malleable materials
  • Finger gym
  • Art work / painting
  • Chalking

Reception Class in Summer Term

In the Summer term, the daily plan adapts to prepare children for Year 1. We follow a more traditional approach where Phonics, English and Maths sessions include teacher-prepared and led activities.

Please see the documents below for more information on the goals and expectations of children in Early Years.
